Book 2 Chapters: prologue-5
Prologue
A tall black she-wolf stalked angrily through the new, green forests of Germany. Her claws brushed the ground, and made a quiet noise as they scraped on the cold ground. Her tail lashed angrily behind her as she bared her fangs, and spoke. “This is all wrong!” She snarled, “Earth has been reborn, new life is sprouting, and there is no one in line to rule.” Her snarl changed to an evil grin, “I will rule! Me, Rage! Ruler of Earth!” With that she, closed her blazing red eyes, and lifted her nose to howl. As she howled her song of sin, the scenery began to change. Darkness came over the land like a shadow. First, the trees grew black as ash, and their leaves fell. Then the ground became dark red and the grass, orange. The sky turned a sickly gray color, as small dark clouds hid the sun. Instead of the sun, a blood red, full moon shown between the clouds. “Perfect.” Rage smiled. Her red eyes glowed mysteriously as her black fur shown dark purple in the red moonlight that bathed the earth in evil.
Chapter 1
“Protectors! Protectors!” Cloud, the small, brown SpiritPack wolf howled to FrostPack who were bathing in the bright sun. He ran towards them with all he had. Cloud and his friend Zinc were the Heaven messengers. The leader of SpiritPack, Yahweh, used them to deliver news and important things to the smaller packs within the lands of SpiritPack. “What is it?” Raven cawed, and blinked at the small wolf. Cloud looked from wolf to wolf and panted, “Rage has seen the weakness of Earth, and taken over the planet!” Flurry shot to her paws, “The planet we saved not to long ago, is now in danger again?” The white wolf snarled, flustered then returned to her haunches. Feather, who sat next to Preston, yawned and stretched before calmly rising to a sitting position. “So, we have to save earth? Again?” Preston remained silent beside her. “No.” Cloud woofed, and sat down in front of FrostPack. “Then what?” Bone snapped anxiously. Cloud closed his eyes and lowered his voice, head, and ears. “There is a prophecy.” “What is it?” Boulder growled. Cloud remained silent. “Cloud!” Boulder snapped again. “Before there is peace, Darkness will rule, four will be chosen, with fire in their hearts.” The pack blinked in confusion. “What does that mean?” Luna tilted her head. Cloud looked at the black and white dog. “I believe it means that FrostPack must choose four wolves to take their place on earth.” “We have to choose four new Protectors?” Preston barked nervously. “Yes.” Cloud nodded. “What is Rage doing now?” Storm gulped. “Choose the four wolves tonight.” Cloud yipped and rose to his feet, and began to walk away. “Because she is headed for SpiritPack next.” FrostPack froze, and their eyes grew wide in horror. SpiritPack couldn’t be destroyed, could it? However, even as they spoke and pondered the question in their minds, far away in the mountains of SpiritLand darkness was arriving. Tips of the trees grew black and dead, the grass became tinted red, and the sky was just turning gray. Rage was growing more powerful.
Chapter 2 Flurry led her pack through the SpiritLands until their paws touched the cold ground of earth. The soil was familiar, Flurry and Boulder had been here before, this was Russia. The Protectors looked around. The Earth they had once saved was now dark and wicked. The trees were black, the grass was dead, and the ground was cold and dry. The sky that had once been bright and friendly was now dark gray, with deep black clouds scattered across the skies. Instead of a sun or a white moon to oversee the land, there was now a full, blood red moon high in the sky. Feather gasped, “What has Rage done to Earth?” The wolves lowered their heads, and remembered the Earth that had once been full of life, the Earth they had saved was now falling into the hands of evil again. “Are we ready to choose?” Flurry lifted her head, and placed her paw in a black mud puddle. The other five wolves did the same. The once black, murky puddle began to glow yellow and a white light appeared. Bone lowered his head to the puddle. He spoke for Storm and himself. “Storm and I choose Rain, a light gray she-wolf. She has a questionable personality, but we believe she will be a great Protector.” Storm nodded in approval, as all the others did as the image of a gray wolf appeared in the puddle. Preston and Feather were next to speak Feather spoke for them. “Preston and I choose Ice, the white she-wolf, sister to Rain. She has a heart of gold, and the desire to protect her family.” Everyone nodded as Ice appeared in the puddle next to her sister, Rain. Boulder spoke next, “I choose Hawk, the dark gray wolf. Hawk has the bravery of a lion and is fit to be leader of this pack.” The wolves nodded again, as Hawk appeared in the puddle. He watched over Ice and Rain, these wolves were already a pack! Flurry went next. “I choose Thorn, the brown wolf. Thorn may be blind, but he has a gift, the power of knowing.” FrostPack nodded again, and Thorn appeared in the picture. Flurry stared at the puddle, How can that be? Those wolves are already a pack? She looked around, and saw the others were wondering the same. “We will travel to them now, and tell them the prophecy. Hopefully they agree to go.” “Ok.” Bone woofed as the others nodded. The FrostPack wolves lashed their tails, and then leapt into the puddle. The scenery changed around them, and soon FrostPack was standing in front of four sleeping wolves. Flurry lowered her head, and stared at the wolves. “Hawk, Ice, Rain, Thorn, wake up.” She rasped. The full-grown wolves began to awaken, and yawned like pups. Once they realized someone had called their names, they stared blankly at the six wolves around them. “Who are you?” Hawk growled and slowly got to his paws. “We are FrostPack, the pack of Protectors.” Bone explained. “We saved Earth once, and died doing it.” Storm added. “Now it is your turn to save earth from a new enemy. Rage is making the planet her kingdom, and finding followers. You must find your own kingdom, then prepare to battle with Rage and her pack; I expect she wants a fight to rule the planet.” Boulder piped in. Flurry nodded, then recited the prophecy, “Before there is peace, Darkness will rule, four will be chosen with Fire in their hearts.” Hawk started oddly at Flurry. “We, us, a bunch of misfits,” He pointed at his comrades with his nose, “Us, save Earth?” Flurry nodded, and rested her snout on Hawk’s shoulder. “You shall be leader of this pack, FirePack.” She smiled as she saw Hawk’s eyes grow wide with enthusiasm. Rain and Ice got to their paws anxiously, as Thorn shakily got to his paws. Flurry stared at the blind wolf Thorn, as she spoke. “Do you four agree to build your kingdom here, find followers, and save earth?” Hawk nodded excitedly and looked back at his packmates. Rain padded next to Hawk, and stood beside him. “I’m in.” She woofed. Ice rose to her paws next and stood beside her sister Rain, and mate; Hawk. “Me too.” Thorn stayed where he was. “What help am I?” He spat, “I’m blind!” Flurry lowered her head and walked over to him. “Thorn,” She began. “You’re special, I know you can see things others can’t. You must help them. You are a powerful wolf. Without you, FirePack cannot be.” The white wolf nuzzled Thorn. The brown wolf slowly got to his paws. She’s pretty. He thought as he felt her pelt, he knew what she looked like, just like that. Flurry was a white wolf with wild amber eyes. Flurry was right, he did have a gift. Thorn proudly, sat beside Hawk, Ice, and Rain. “Let’s do it.” Flurry smiled, and stood in front of her pack. “You four are now Protectors.” FrostPack raised their noses and howled. The newly formed FirePack joined them. As the wind blew across the moorland, FrostPack disappeared with the wind, and only their song could be heard across the land. “We are always watching from SpiritPack.” Their calls echoed in the FirePack wolves’ ears. “Always.”
Chapter 3 “I think we should find an old human building for our camp.” Ice suggested. “Yeah, then we’ll have room to train ourselves for battle, or anything like that.” Rain piped in. Hawk held his tail high, “We will search for an old building, make it our home, and then begin training. I am leader, Ice you are FirePack’s beta, Rain you are in charge of hunting, and Thorn…” His voice trailed off, “Thorn you are in charge of finding fire, and taming it.” The wolves looked oddly at Hawk, “Fire?” They all gasped. Hawk stared at them, “We are FirePack aren’t we? Fire would make us powerful, and I’m positive Rage does not have control over fire.” Rain and Ice dipped their heads in agreement, but Thorn bared his fangs and snarled. “Why am I in charge of fire? I’m blind, I’ll probably burn my whiskers off!” Before Hawk could speak, Flurry’s words slithered into Thorn’s mind, “Thorn, you’re special. You see things others cannot. You must help them, you are a powerful wolf, and without you, FirePack could never be…” Thorn dipped his head, “Never mind,” He woofed, “I’ll do it.” * * * * Rain carefully placed her footing on a fallen tree which stretched across a river. She looked below at the waves, and saw the swift, rolling black water. She swallowed nervously, one wrong move, and she would slip. Ill at ease, she started walking. Hawk and Ice were ahead of her, and Thorn was behind her. Thorn sniffed the air, and carefully placed one paw in front of the other. He wasn’t planning to fall into the river today. All of a sudden Rain screeched ahead of him. Her paws went slipping sideways and she was falling into the river below. Hoping his timing was correct; Thorn leapt forward and reached out with his jaws. Rain’s fur entered his mouth, as he pulled her back to safely back onto the log. She was jittery, but her feet were now stably on the tree’s trunk. She dug her claws into the wood the rest of the way across.
Chapter 4 “Look at that!” Rain howled, as FirePack came upon the outskirts of a city. “That park would be perfect for a camp! And look, it even has a building in case we need shelter!” Rain pointed with her nose to the old park, with an Activities building on it. Surprisingly, the grass was green, and the plants were alive. Even though Rage and DarkPack might be a few miles away. “You’re right!” Hawk woofed, he warily trotted to the center and sniffed the whole way. There was no sign of evil here. “We will use this park, and the old human building. Ice you go out and hunt, Rain you and I will investigate the building, Thorn…” His voice trailed off as he looked at the blind wolf, “Thorn, you should go in search of fire.” Thorn dug his claws into the earth. Don’t feel sorry for me! The wolves nodded, and went to perform their duties. Ice sniffed through the park, and the surrounding forests for any scent of prey. Soon her nose caught something, rabbit! She began to stalk. Her blue eyes glistened excitedly with every step she took. “A little closer.” She yipped. “A little closer and I’ll have it.” * * * * Hawk sniffed the long, dark corridor, of the building. Rain stood beside him, staring into the darkness with uncertainty. Hawk took a step closer, almost expecting Rage, or a human to jump out at him. Squeak! Hawk froze and looked to the floor. It was only a rat, which had made that noise. he crouched low, and lunged, capturing the creature between his paws. He killed it quickly, picked up his kill, then trotted through the darkness with Rain right behind him. * * * * Thorn trudged along. His paws were heavy, and his mind was a blur. Me? How am I supposed to find fire? I’m blind! Then he heard something, a voice calling his name. Thorn! It howled. His black cloudy eyes grew wide. “Huh?” He stuttered. This way Thorn! Thorn turned his body to follow the voice. “Where are we going?” he shouted. Suddenly, he felt rocks under his paws. “What?” he yelped, and sniffed at the stones. The rocks smelt normal, just like any other rock. But something seemed to tell Thorn these were special…somehow… Thunder rolled overhead, and rain fell. Thorn, come back tomorrow! The voice echoed in his head before fading. “Tomorrow?” Thorn mumbled.
Chapter 5 Night fell upon the land, casting a dark shadow in every direction. Thunder rolled over-head, lightning danced across the sky, and rain fell in a drizzle. FirePack were safe from the storm inside the building. The corridors were no longer dark and mysterious, Rain had figured out a way to keep the doors open by propping a rock against them. Hawk and Ice were curled up peacefully next to each other. Lightning struck again and lit up the room, turning their fur a sudden white color before returning to normal. Thorn wasn’t sleeping, his thoughts were buzzing like angry bees. Why did he have to find fire? Why was it so important? Did they really need it? These thoughts kept him awake. Rain tossed and turned in her sleep, she was sharing a dream with Rage; Rain was walking through a dark forest. Trees were dead and bare, the ground was dry and cold, and the sky was evil with a red moon hanging low in the air. “Where am I?” Rain gulped, as her dream self kept walking. Suddenly, a voice spoke. “My dear, you are in DarkLands. The lands in which I, Rage rule.” The tall she-wolf stepped out from behind an old, dead Oak tree. “Rage?” Rain shivered, her eyes wide, she began to back-up. “Trust me, there is no need to fear, come with me Rain, and you will be safe.” Rage beckoned with a wave of her tail. Rain looked into the wolf’s burning red eyes, and took a step forward. A spell was cast. Rain followed Rage through the DarkLands, with every step she took, her faith in SpiritPack began to disappear. Soon a small castle appeared in front of them. Rain gasped at the breathtaking castle, it was beautiful! Its walls were a dark purple, its windows were broad black rimmed, its door was tall and black with DarkPack’s symbol printed on it. “Come inside.” Rage smiled, and singled with her tail for servants of the castle to lower the drawbridge. They did, and Rain followed the tall black she-wolf into her castle.

Book 2 Chapters: 6-10
Chapter 6 Rage stretched and rose to her paws. Her lips curled into a smile, she knew Rain would come to DarkPack’s side, eventually. The queen trotted through the castle corridors until she reached her throne room. Her throne sat in the center of the area with red moonlight turning its purple fabric a sickly brown color. But Rage didn’t care, she sneered and walked over to it. Before leaping up to sit on it, Rage ran her paw over its seat cushion. “All the greatest human kings and queens have sat here. But not any more. A new age is coming.” She growled and jumped on it. “Wolves will rule.” She howled, her red eyes were shining in the dim light. * * * * FirePack began to stir; Hawk and Ice shook their sleep away as Thorn also awakened. His deep, sightless eyes were clouded with questions. Rain rose drowsy and yawned. She had not had a good night sleep. Her dream self had spent the whole night at Rage’s castle taking the grand tour. Rain was curious, curious to go back to DarkPack’s castle tonight. The breathtaking castle captivated her, but she didn’t know that she was under a spell. “Rain!” Hawk woofed, the light gray she-wolf was jolted back to reality, as Hawk spoke. “Rain, you, and I will go hunting. Ice, I want you to stay here and think of battle weapons and strategies. We’ll need all the help we can get to win this battle. Thorn, you go in search of fire again.” Thorn smiled slightly, he knew just where to go, back to the Stone Place. The wolves went their separate ways to perform their jobs. The red moonlight greeted them outside, they missed the bright glow of a warm, morning sun, and the sweet sight of fresh dew on the green grasses. Thorn followed the voice once again, This way thorn! The voice howled. Thorn obeyed and weaved his way through the forest. Faster Thorn! The voice laughed. Thorn began to run faster, through the dense green forest in FirePack territory. He ducked and dodged branches and brambles when the voice told him to. Suddenly, the ground changed beneath him. He felt stones under his pads! “Stone Place!” He exclaimed. He lowered his nose to sniff the rocks. They smelled normal enough. Thorn reached out and touched them with his paw. He then knew what they looked like, an image of them appeared in his mind; small, and a light gray color. Throw them. The voice rasped. Thorn picked up one stone in his teeth, then tossed it back to the ground. All of sudden, he felt a spark hit his nose. “Fire?” He gasped. Yes, you have found fire, Thorn. Thorn beamed, and then bent down to scoop up as many stones as he could in his mouth. He would return to this place later to get more. “Thanks.” Thorn woofed, addressing the voice but not knowing who and were it was, or if it was even real.
Ice sat on the cold, lush grass. Thoughts of battles buzzed in her head. …Battle strategies.. She mused to herself, deep in thought. Then it came to her, she shot to her paws, excited about her idea. “I know!” She exclaimed, “We can each have a signature battle move, or more then one!” Once the wave of excitement passed, she sat back down on the grass and thought about what her special battle move might be.
Rain was distracted throughout the hunting trip and only caught one mouse, whereas Hawk was fully focused and alert and caught three rabbits. Rain could not help but want to return to camp and sleep, so she could see Rage and her castle again. “What’s up with you today?” Hawk growled, “You’re usually hunting better then me!” “I guess I’m just distracted.” She lowered her head and made up a lie, “Just nervous if there is going to be a huge battle.” Hawk nodded in understanding, “We can return to camp now, we’ve caught enough.” He did not know the secrets Rain was keeping from herself, and the whole pack. Rain smiled, as Hawk made his way through the trees, she would dream with Rage again tonight.
Chapter 7 “I know how to make fire!” Thorn burst into the camp with a mouthful of the stones called flint. The others had already returned from their duties and were resting in camp and waiting for Thorn to return. When he emerged from the undergrowth, they all trotted over to him. “Really?” Ice gasped, her tail wagging violently. “How?” Hawk piped in. Rain stood as still as a statue. Only her tail was wagging slowly, no one but Thorn noticed that. “Like this.” Thorn woofed, and set down the rocks. He picked up one, then threw it onto the grass. The stones clicked together and sent sparks flying everywhere. The ground below them glowed with heat, before a small fire was smoldering by their paws. All the wolves jumped back, except for Thorn. He grabbed a long, nearby stick and jabbed it in the fire, forcing it to grow bigger. Hawk, Ice, and Rain watched in awe as Thorn pulled the stick out of the fire. The end of it, was in flames like a torch. “See?” Thorn smiled, swinging the torch around like a sword, “Fire can be deadly, we can use it in battle against Rage and her pack.” Hawk and Ice both smiled, and sat by the fire. Thorn threw the stick into the fire and it burst into taller flames. The three wolves howled joyfully to the sky, with the fire dancing in the middle of them. The smoke stung their eyes, and pulled at their lungs, but they didn’t flinch. They were FirePack, they would seem be immune to the dangers of fire. Use this fire to kill rage? Rain gulped, she was not howling with her pack. nervously, she stumbled back to the building. Rage seems so nice. She coughed, from the smoke of the fire. I must warn her of the danger. Rain was slowly becoming a DarkPack wolf. Fire, if used against her, could hurt her. Hawk turned and saw Rain leave. Now he was sure something was defiantly up. Even through the lands were cursed with darkness, you could still tell when it was morning and when it was night. The land was always a little darker, or a little lighter. The wolves of FirePack were settled peacefully in the Activities Center building getting ready to sleep. Ice and Thorn fell asleep right away, Hawk tried to stay awake to keep an eye on Rain and see why she was acting so weird, but he soon his eyelids drooped so low that he had to close them. The room disappeared as he closed his eyes and slept. Rain was in her dreams, traveling to Rage’s castle. Her paws made a scuffling noise as they brushed the ground. The DarkLands seemed, almost inviting now. She was no longer afraid to walk through the darkness as she had been before. “Welcome back dearie.” Rage smiled, holding her tail and head high. Rain bowed her head, “It’s good to be back here. I’ve been wanting to return all day.” The black she-wolf was hearing just what she wanted to her, and her lips curled back into a smile, revealing her large white teeth. “You know you can visit me in the day, don’t you?” “I can?” Rain’s heart began t beat faster. Now she wouldn’t have to wait until night! “Of course you can. Just head to the DarkLands, and follow the snakes. I’ll be waiting.” Rage lashed her tail, and vanished into the eerie mist of the forest. “Follow the snakes.” Rain woofed quizzically. “I can do that.”
Chapter 8 Thorn stuck his stick in the fire that was blazing in the middle of FirePack’s camp. The brown wolf had started it with the flint he had found a few days before. Today FirePack would be doing battle training and strategies with their new weapon, fire. Hawk also jabbed his unlit torch into the fire until the end was glowing with ambers from the fire. He waved it in the air, so the flames would grow bigger. Hawk and Thorn would battle first, then Rain and Ice. The two she-wolves waited by the building for their turn. Thorn leapt forward and tried to strike Hawk with his torch, Hawk dodged and counterattacked by dragging his torch through the air by Thorn’s snout. Thorn smelled the burning wood and felt it faintly sting his sightless eyes. Thinking quickly, he jumped forward and raked his claws down Hawk’s flank. The gray wolf flinched, but reared up on his hind legs and brought all his weight down on Thorn’s shoulders. Thorn yelped and fell to the ground, his torch eluding his grasp and falling with him. Thorn hit the ground with a painful blast, as his torch started up another fire. Hawk yelped, dropped his torch, and jumped back, the second fire was almost under his paws. Thorn was free to get back to his paws, and he did. “Fire was a good idea.” He smiled and licked Hawk’s snout. Hawk smiled back. Soon his pack would be immune to the dangers of fire; the flames would no longer sting their eyes or burn their fur, and the smoke wouldn’t make their lungs heavy. They would just need to practice. “Our turn Rain.” Ice woofed, and walked to the center of the camp. Rain followed her, still as distracted as she had been the other days before. Ice steadied herself, her torch hanging lit in her jaws. Rain slowly ignited her torch and got herself ready for a battle. She didn’t want to do battle practice, she wanted to go into the DarkLands, follow the snakes, and get to see Rage’s castle again. After the training. She kept telling herself, After the training. “Ready?” Ice woofed, staring at her sister. Rain took a deep breath, “Yeah.” Ice leapt forward with her paws outstretched, claws ready, torch burning, and tail lashing out behind her. Rain began to backup, as Ice landed in front of her. Snarling, Ice waved the torch in Rain’s face. The light from the fire, temporarily blinded her, then Ice dug her claws into Rain’s shoulder. The light gray she-wolf snarled at her sister, as blood stained her shoulder. Angered and pretending Ice was trying to attack her new friend Rage, she twisted her body and rolled under Ice’s underbelly, clawing at her flesh the whole time. Ice howled in pain as her own blood spilled onto the ground. Quickly, Ice regained her bearings, then stabbed Rain with the lit end of her torch. For a true FirePack wolf, this wouldn’t hurt at all, but Rain was no longer with FirePack. For every day she thought about Rage and DarkPack, she slowly become a DarkPack wolf. Rain howled in pain, and fell to the ground, as the burning heat tore at her pelt and created a bald spot. Ice quickly threw her weapon aside. “Great SpiritPack, Rain are you ok?” She yelped, bending over her sister. “Fire shouldn’t hurt you like that.” She grew confused. Rain slowly got to her feet, her bald spot numb with pain, “I’m fine.” She managed to say. “I guess I’m just not fully a FirePack wolf yet.” She lied, knowing she would never be a FirePack wolf. “We can rest now.” Hawk ordered from the building, rabbit blood dripping from his snout. “You defiantly need to recover from that wound Rain.” Hawk woofed. Rain smiled; perhaps this would be a change to see Rage! “I’ll go for a walk.” She woofed, “My shoulder is stiff from the practice battle, a walk might help it.” She lied, almost believing the lie herself. “Ok.” Hawk woofed, “Be back before dark.” Where is she really going? Thorn pondered in his mind. Rain never usually goes for walks. The gray she-wolf nodded to her pack mates and made her way through the green forests of FireLand, and into the dead forests of DarkLands. Green snakes slithered underfoot and hissed as she walked. Follow the snakes. Rain thought, and that was what she did.
Chapter 9 A low growling exploded in FirePack’s camp. Thorn was inside the building; sleeping. Ice and Hawk were eating by the fresh-kill pile. Hawk perked his ears, “What was that?” He looked around the camp, and saw that the bushes at the edge of the park were trembling. “There’s something over there.” Ice gulped. “Get in the building with Thorn!” Hawk ordered, staring at the bushes, his muscles were tense but he was ready to fight. “No.” Ice replied firmly, “I’m staying with you.” Hawk nodded reluctantly, and waited for the creature to emerge from the shrubbery. * * * * * Rain followed the green snakes through the dark forest, as they led her deeper into the DarkLands and closer to DarkPack’s castle. Her light gray fur was turned dark gray in the red moonlight that peered down through the trees’ bare branches. Her once amber eyes seemed to change to a blood red color. “How long until we’re there?” Rain wondered aloud. “Only a few momentssssss…” The snakes answered her. Rain began to grow uncertain as darkness engulfed the forests around her. Why was she traveling to DarkPack’s castle? Why was she so drawn to Rage? Why, was the beginning to all of her questions, but she still knew no answers. All she wanted was to hear Rage’s voice again, and see her night black fur and blazing red eyes. “We’re here….” The snakes hissed, and pointed with their forked tongues to the castle in front of them. Rain gasped, this was the same castle from her dreams. It looked even more beautiful in person! “May darknesssss Be withhhhhh you…” The snakes replied, before slithering into the moat surrounding the castle. “Rage?” Rain woofed quietly. The drawbridge to the castle began to lower, and a tall black she-wolf stepped outside. “Welcome Rain, to my castle.” Rage smiled, with a mysterious glint in her eyes. * * * * * “Bear attack!” Ice howled from the opening of the building to alert Thorn. The brown wolf rushed outside, he couldn’t see, but he could hear the growls of the black bear fighting with Hawk. “What should we do?” Thorn yelped. “Black bears are easy to fight. Hawk and I can chase him off.” Ice woofed, looking sympathetically at Thorn. Anger burned inside him, I can do anything you can do. My blindness doesn’t stop me! His paws itched with anger. “No. I’m going to help to!” He growled and charged at the bear. Ice stayed behind to guard the fresh-kill pile and the entrance to the building. Where is my sister? She hissed in her mind. She should have been back by now! Hawk snapped at the bears’ feet as its paws clawed violently in the air. The dark gray wolf finally attached his jaws onto the Black Bears’ hind leg and bit down hard. The animal barely flinched. Thorn judged his distance carefully with his sense of smell, then lunged, clamping his teeth onto the bears’ shoulder. The bear roared angrily, and swatted Thorn away, before turning on Hawk. Thorn turned his body so he landed on his paws as he hit the ground. He panted and waited for a change to strike. Hawk leapt out of the way before the bear could wrap its’ jaws around his neck. Hawk curled his lips into a snarl, revealing his sharp, deadly fangs. Thorn smelled his change and jumped onto the creatures’ back. He grabbed onto its pelt and tugged, as the bear “danced” around on its hind legs. “Leave our camp!” Thorn snarled, “And leave empty pawed!” The black bear wrestled Thorn to the ground, and Thorn fell, banging his head on the ground. Thorn could not hear the rest of the battle. Hawk snarled and ran at the bear, hopefully chasing it out of the camp. Knowing it was defeated, the bear charged back into the undergrowth with only a few wounds to show for the battle. The FirePack leader panted as he ran over to Thorn’s fallen body. Ice was already standing by his side. “Thorn!” She cried, “Thorn can you hear me?” Hawk sniffed at the brown wolf’s body. Blood stained his snout and shoulder. He wasn’t dead, only knocked out. “He’ll be fine. He’s just knocked out from the impact of his fall.” Hawk panted, “Help me drag him into the building.” Hawk and Ice dragged Thorn’s bedraggled body into the building. Hawk sat down beside him and began to clean the blind wolf’s wounds. As he did he wondered, Where is Rain?
Chapter 10 “Have you decided if you want to join DarkPack yet?” Rage woofed as she led Rain through the halls of castle. Rain lowered her head, “I….I….I think I’ll join.” She was still somewhat uncertain, and Rage knew that. The black she-wolf knew she first had to draw Rain in, so she would trust her, then Rage could use this foolish wolf. “Come with me.” Rage ordered and led the light gray wolf into the throne room. * * * * * Flurry sat down in the circle with her pack mates. “FrostPack!” She announced. FirePack is not yet prepared for battle, and Rain is becoming a traitor!” “Rage is becoming more powerful then we thought.” Boulder hung his head. “Rage is more powerful then anyone thought.” Bone growled. “What are we gonna do?” Preston gulped. “If I was still alive, I’d tear that “queen” Limb-from-limb.” Feather growled. “Calm yourself, Feather.” Flurry smiled, Feather was always the one to speak out against anyone and want to fight. “I think we should let nature take its course. Rain will realize what she truly has to do. And not to worry, FirePack will grow stronger.” Storm woofed, her green eyes were clouded with the memory of fighting with Shadow and ScarPack. She herself had been a traitor in the end, but FrostPack forgave her. “Storm is right.” Flurry concluded. “All we can do is wait.” * * * * * Thorn opened his eyes, everything was black – as usual – but now he could hear, he wasn’t knocked out any more. Hawk smiled at the brown wolf, “Welcome back.” Thorn rose to his paws, “Is the bear gone? Is everyone ok?” He gulped, hoping everything was fine. “Don’t worry, he’s gone, and we’re all fine.” “Has Rain returned yet?” Hawk and Ice both looked at each other. “No.” They both answered, their eyes were wide with worry. “FirePack!” The three wolves spun around to see a stocky, gray wolf. His eyes were a dark brown. Hawk instantly knew this was a DarkPack wolf. Hawk ran up to the wolf, lips drawn back in a snarl and fur bristling with anger. “What do you want?” He hissed. “I have come with a proposal from Rage. She wants a battle to rule the planet in four days, at the wide plains. Do you accept?” Ice padded up to her mate, “Four days? Is that enough time to prepare?” Hawk ignored Ice’s comment and stared angrily at the enemy wolf. “FirePack agrees.” He snarled, “Now get out of our camp.” “I have one more announcement, DarkPack has taken Rain onto our side. She will also be at the battle.” The wolf smiled as he saw the wolf’s shocked reactions.

Chapter 11 Rain awoke to the pitter-patter of rain on a roof of a building. She opened her eyes, and at first forgot where she was. But then it came back to her, she was at Rage’s castle, she was a member of DarkPack now. “Good morning.” Rage sat upon her throne, Rain slept below on the hard stone floor. Her tail wagged slowly, she was deep in thought. Rain rose to a sitting position before speaking. “Morning,” She replied, “What happens today?” “Follow me my dear,” Rage jumped down from her throne and began to walk down the hallway, looking back once or twice to make sure Rain was following her. Rage led her through the corridors and to the tower of the castle. Rage unlocked the barred door with her nose, and pushed it open. “Get in the room.” She ordered. “Why?” Rain look into the small, dim lighted room. There was only a small, window on the wall, but it was barred. The room was a cell, a prison. “Do it!” Rain grimaced and obeyed. She watched in confusion as Rage slammed the door closed and latched it shut with the block of wood. Rage slowly began to walk back to her throne, her voice echoed through the halls, “I will come back to visit you every few days. I will have to feed you, what use are you to me dead? Then in four days, you will be needed at the battle.” Rain then understood what had happened, she had been tricked and was now a hostage to Rage. * * * * * Morning came in a fog, nothing could be seen but the red glow of the moon in the sky and the fait glow of FirePack’s torches. They were doing battle training again, and they were learning fast and fighting skillfully. FirePack just might have a chance in the battle! “Great fighting!” Hawk approved his pack mates. Ice smiled and threw her torch into the fire before touching noses with her mate. “I’m with you till the end.” She whispered. Hawk’s eyes were happy, but clouded with worry. Could FirePack win the battle? And what about Rain, would they meet her in battle? Thorn threw his torch into the fire and walked to the building. “I’m going to rest.” He woofed, the same worries clouded his mind. Secretly, Thorn loved Rain. He never wanted to meet her in battle. Hawk nodded to Thorn, “Ice and I will go hunting.” As Hawk and Ice set out to hunt, Thorn laid down to rest. Immediately, he entered the world of dreams. He was walking through the DarkLands, following the scent of Rain. Snakes slithered underfoot, and in his dreams he was glad he could see, The reptiles were green and slimy like they lived in water for a long time. The snakes led him to a tall, dark purple castle. Here, Rain’s scent mixed with that of another wolf; Rage. “No!” He yelped, and ran back to FirePack camp. He awoke in a shock, his heart was beating like a fast-paced drum, and his tail was lashing back and forth nervously. His pack mates were asleep beside him. Suddenly, Thorn felt a shadow looming over them at the doorway. “Who are you?” He growled, his sightless eyes staring into the darkness. His voice awoke hawk and Ice next to him, and they too saw a shadow in the doorway. Hawk jumped to his paws ready to attack, Ice moved closer to Thorn, trembling in fear. “Do not fear.” Said the black she-wolf, her green eyes glowing in the dim light, “I am Storm, Protector, and member of FrostPack. I have come with news.” “News?” Hawk echoed, and slowly began to relax. If this wolf was also a Protector, then how bad could the news be? Hawk sat down next to Ice and Thorn and waited for Storm to speak. Thorn stayed completely still, guessing who the news could be about; Rain. “One of your pack members, Rain, has joined DarkPack. Don’t grow mad at her, she was hypnotized this decision was not on her own free will. A wolf like her would never betray you unless of course, it was beyond her control.” Hawk tensed his muscles and charged at the doorway, “We have to get her back! I knew it!” But Storm blocked the doorway with her body. “No.” She woofed, “The best thing to do now is continue your battle training, and fight in the battle against DarkPack. Rain will make the right choice in the end.” Storm closed her mysterious eyes, “I was once a traitor once. I was hypnotized too, as Rain is.” Storm turned her head to Thorn, and suddenly, Thorn saw the battle with Shadow and his pack; Storm looked directly into Shadow’s “moon eye” and she was hypnotized. A voice seemed to tell her to kill the white wolf, to kill Flurry. Storm obeyed and stalked over to her pack mate. Flurry was reluctant to fight her, and kill her. But Shadow just laughed. In the end, the spell had been broken, and Storm had made the right choice. Soon the images of the FrostPack and ScarPack battle disappeared. Storm opened her eyes, “Prepare for the battle and have no worry, FrostPack is waiting in SpiritLands to welcome you one day.” With that, Storm faded into the fog of the night. “We will prepare.” Hawk promised, and tucked his nose under his tail to return to sleep. We will be ready. He closed his eyes. And we will win.
Chapter 12 FirePack trained many hours on the morning after Storm’s visit. The battle was three days away, and the wolves were content on being alert and ready. FirePack didn’t know how many wolves Rage had under her control, so they would have to be ready to fight an army from 5 to possibly 500. They didn’t know, but DarkPack only consisted of ten wolves and only six would be fighting against FirePack. Each wolf had created his own signature move. A move they had practiced to use on opponents and hopefully end a fight. Ice’s move was the Fire Roll. First, she would jab her opponent with the lit end of her torch, then she would roll under their bellies; raking her claws on their soft flesh, before jumping aside quickly before the opponent can even lift a paw. Hawk’s signature move was the Hawks Talons. If his opponent had him pinned to the ground, Hawk would pretend he was dead. Then, when the opponent would move onto another fight, Hawk would pounce and wrestle the enemy wolf to the ground. Thorn’s move was called, The Thorn of Fire. Since he was a small wolf and he was blind, he would judge his distance from his opponent with his sense of smell. Then he would leap onto the enemy’s’ back, attach his fangs onto their flesh and pull, hopefully knocking them off balance. Once their training was finished, Hawk and Thorn went hunting while Ice guarded the camp, and the stones they used to create fire, Fire Stones. “Do you think we’ll win the battle?” Thorn woofed as he listened to Hawk sneak up behind a mouse. Hawk’s ears twitched, “I’m not sure…It…It depends on a lot of things..” Hawk pounced on his prey, and soon it was hanging limp in his jaws. He dropped in on the ground in front of Thorn. “Depends on DarkPack’s number of wolves, and other things like that.” Thorn nodded and listened for any sign of prey. Over-head, in the dark gray sky, the red moon turned the ground and nearby clouds a bloody color. It made Hawk think of the upcoming battle, and how much blood would stain the battlefield. * * * * In the tower of Rage’s castle, Rain was crouched over an uneaten rabbit that the DarkPack wolves had given her. The trance she had been in was now completely broken, and all she wanted to do know was return to FirePack, to return to her friends. But Rage wouldn’t allow that. Rain was a hostage. Footsteps sounded through the hallway, and in front of her prison cell stood Rage. Her tail was swishing from side-to-side angrily, and her eyes were gleaming violently. “So, how are we doing up here?” Rage almost laughed out the words. “You had to have it all…You are a greedy monster..” Rain slowly looked up into Rage’s red eyes, but the trance did not return, “Your end is near, in four days FirePack will kill you on the battlefield. Then I will be free, and I will be the one to laugh at your misery.” Rage’s lips curled into a menacing smile. “On the day of the battle, we will see if you speak more then you act.” She lashed her tail, and seemed to fade into the darkness like a shadow. Rain was once again left alone in the castle tower. The gray she-wolf jumped at the barred window that separated her from freedom. She rested her paws on its’ cold sill and looked outside at the land below. In the sky, the moon turned the landscape red. Blood seemed to engulf the whole world. Rain regretfully raised her nose to the sky and howled.
Chapter 13 Thorn performed his move The Thorn of Fire, on his practice opponent Ice. He leapt at her and landed on her back, sending her crashing to the ground. He jabbed her with the flamed end of his burning torch, then jumped back before she could snap at his paws with her teeth. These wolves were true members of FirePack, and the fire could no longer hurt them at all. “I think we’ve totally mastered fire and our battle moves.” Ice panted as she and Thorn tossed their torches into the small, smoldering fire. “Yeah, I agree.” Hawk sat down beside the fire. “We can sleep the rest of the day, but tonight I want us all to meet around the fire. Thorn nodded, and trotted to the building to rest. Ice touched noses with her mate, then led him under a Maple tree to rest. They laid next to each other, and closed their eyes. The battle was in two days, and tension was rising. Would Rain make the right decision as Storm had? Who would win the battle to rule the earth? * * * * Night made the land darker then it originally was. The shadows seemed to dance in every direction throughout the DarkLands, then stop and circle around FirePack’s territory. Ice opened her eyes to see a huge campfire glowing in the center of camp. Hawk stood beside it, staring into the depths of its flames. He looked up to see Ice, “It’s time.” He woofed. Ice rose to her feet to fetch Thorn. Time for what? She thought to herself. “Thorn, come here.” She woofed into the building and soon Thorn emerged and followed her to the fire. The three wolves sat down in a triangle around the luminous fire. Thorn could not see the flames, but he could just imagine them dancing, and their ambers floating up to the sky. “What are we supposed to so?” Thorn woofed, the flames danced in his black, sightless eyes. “Sing to SpiritPack and pray we win the battle.” Hawk lifted his snout to howl to the black sky. The others followed and FirePack began to sing. The spirits of FrostPack gathered around them, their presence was felt by everyone, but only Thorn could see them. He lowered his head for a moment, then amazingly he saw the six wolves sitting around them. He couldn’t see the scenery around him, or the flames of the fire, all he could see were the wolves of FrostPack. He saw Flurry’s warm smile, Feather’s playful nudge to Boulder, he heard Preston’s shy laugh, he saw Bone who was sitting beside him crack a joke, and all of FrostPack laughed. Raven flew above the fire, dodging the floating ambers, and cawed in the night. Storm raised her nose to howl with FirePack, and the rest of FrostPack followed, this time Luna joined in. “We are Protectors.” Thorn said quietly as he howled, with all the wolves joining in. * * * * Rain lifted her head, the songs of wolves echoed through the lands. FirePack! She gasped, and jumped to the windowsill. Her paws touched the cold sill, and reminded her of the horrible mistake she had made. She closed her miserable, amber eyes and howled back to FirePack and FrostPack. In the sky above thunder rolled, low and quiet. A storm would soon come. However, no clouds covered the moon’s red face.
Chapter 14 Rain threw herself against the door of her cell. The impact hurt her shoulder, but she kept doing it again, and again. Morning had come, but the cell was still dark inside. Rain snarled and clawed at the wooden body of the door. “Things can’t get much worse!” She snarled, “I’ve had it up to here!” her tail lashed angrily, “Your end is near!” She bellowed. Clawing, and jumping at her cell door wouldn’t work, there was noting else left to do but pace. Rain paced the grounds of her prison cell, her claws scraped angrily on the stone floor. “You had to have it all! But when the battle comes, you will die. You will die on the battlefield and I will be the one to laugh at you as you die. Your misery will become my pleasure!” She screamed, hoping Rage heard her. Rain’s amber eyes glowed angrily as she launched herself at the door again, “I’ll burn this castle down!” Rain would never of thought of burning the beautiful castle down when she was in the trance, but now the structure seemed to haunt her and taunt her. She saw no beauty in it now. “Thunder!” Rage looked down at her servant as she sat atop her throne, “Will you do the honors of shutting up that stupid mongrel?” Rain’s angry howls echoed through the entire castle. “I’d be delighted Ma’am.” Thunder dipped his head and charged up to the tower. There Rain stood cursing the cell door, but yelling and hoping Rage heard her. “You think you’ll win this battle!” Rain snarled just as Thunder burst into her cell, his weight broke the door down. Rain froze in hear, as Thunder charged at her with his jaws wide open and ready to tear flesh. The stocky wolf ran into Rain and threw her against the stone wall. He watched happily, as the she-wolf fell to the ground, knocked out. He slipped a collar around her neck with his teeth. The collar was attached to the wall by a long chain, so even though the door was broken down Rain still could not escape. “You’ve only lost you mind.” Thunder laughed as he walked back to the throne room. * * * * “Are we sure FirePack can defeat Rage?” Bone woofed nervously. “Well, we know they can fight, but the question who will win, is in the hands of fate.” Luna replied. Flurry lowered her head in thought. She too was nervous about FirePack’s upcoming battle, which would be in less then a day. Raven flew to the center of their circle, “I think we have to have faith in FirePack. If I remember correctly, there was one pack which also held the weight of the world on their shoulders, and SpiritPack had faith in them.” Raven looked at all the members of FrostPack. Feather nodded, “He’s right. We have to trust FirePack, just like SpiritPack trusted us when we went on our quest.”
Chapter 15 Heat lightning danced in the horizon of the dark sky, thunder followed every few moments. Below in FirePack’s camp, the three wolves ate their breakfast. Today was the day before the battle. “We don’t need to practice today.” Hawk took a breath, “But I think we should travel to the battlefield, and camp there. In the morning, we will be ready for the battle. “I agree.” Ice woofed, as she finished her meal. “Ok.” Thorn lowered his head. I don’t want to meet Rain in battle….I…..I love her… “Thorn,” Ice woofed as soon as the brown wolf had finished eating. “Gather all the Fire Stones that you can carry. I’ll gather the torches.” Thorn nodded and made his way to the rock pile they had made with all the Flint Thorn had found. He picked out 18 rocks, possible enough the carry and use in battle. But how would he carry them? Then an idea struck him! He ran into the Activities Center, and grabbed a gift shop display Gardening bag. Proudly, he pushed the Fire Stones into it’s pouch and swung the strap around his head. “An easy way to tote!” He laughed. Ice walked over to him, “Can I put the torches in there too?” Thorn nodded. Ice dropped the six sticks into the Gardening Bag and turned to Thorn. “Good idea with the bag.” She smiled. Hawk trotted up to his pack mates with his tail held high. “Ready to go?” He woofed. Thorn and Ice nodded, nervously. A battle would follow them in the morning. “Ok. Follow me.” Hawk woofed and led FirePack through the forest and out of their territory. Outside their territory, the land was dark. The ground was cracked and cold underfoot, and the grass was long but tinted red like it had been burnt by fire. The sky above held no stars, only a blood red full moon that had shown for weeks. Heat lightning struck again and lit up the horizon of the sky, and reflected in the wolf’s eyes. They kept walking until they came to a huge field of grass. It seemed to stretch on forever. “We’re here.” Hawk woofed. “Yeah.” Ice gulped. Thorn reminded silent, and curled up into a ball with the battle supplies next to him. The other wolves curled up to sleep also. Battles tomorrow. Hawk gulped. His heart was beating faster then a drum, but then a wave of reassurance washed over him. But I know we’ll be ready.
Chapter 16 “Midnight!” Rage’s howl sounded through her castle, “It is midnight, time to leave for the battle tomorrow!” Her six wolves who she had in her army stood at attention in front of the drawbridge. These wolves included Thunder, Sky, Pike, Stone, Eagle and Snake. “Wait, before we leave I almost forgot. Pike, go to the castle tower and fetch Rain. She’s probably still knocked out so you’ll just have to carry her. She will be needed at this battle.” Rage turned to the gray wolf. “Yes you highness.” Pike dipped his head before heading down the dark corridor and up the stairs to the castle tower. He stepped inside the cell, and saw the battered gray she-wolf lying askew on the cold floor. Around her neck was the collar that connected to the cell wall. Pike trotted over to the wolf, and bit at the shackle until it broke into two chains. Then he scooped the wolf onto his back, and carried her down the stairs and back to the entryway of the castle with the chain clanging on the steps behind him. “Stone,” Rage looked down at the gray wolf, “You will be in charge of this mongrel, you will carry her to the battlefield and make sure the Protectors do not steal her back. She is a hostage. Stone dipped his head and stepped over to Pike, who gave the she-wolf to him. “We will leave now.” Rage signaled with her tail, and two servants who were staying to guard the castle lowered the drawbridge. A cold wind greeted Rage as she began to walk into the dark forest with her wolves behind her. The battle was tomorrow, and Rage hoped DarkPack would have the upper hand. Chapter 17 Morning came across the Wide Plains, but no sun shown only the red moon. Thunder boomed and lightning danced across the sky, but this was no longer heat lightning. Surprisingly, no raindrops fell yet. FirePack awoke and began to stalk through the tall, red tinted grasses. Every so often, Thorn would drop a Fire Stone in the grass so he could just drop another stone and start the fires. The sparks would catch onto the grasses and make FirePack more powerful. DarkPack was already awake, and Rage was getting her wolves in order. They were aliened in a straight line. Every wolf was nervous for the battle, but they hid their emotions well. Rage took her place behind the line of wolves, next to Stone who stood by Rain’s bedraggled body. It was then that the gray she-wolf began to awaken. Rain opened her eyes to see Rage and a gray wolf standing beside her, and the battle about to start. She tried to lift her head, but a sharp throbbing banged in her head. She was still in some pain after what Thunder did to her. “Dang. My head hurts.” She managed to snarl. “Well good morning.’ Rage sneered at the captive wolf. “So glad you could join us for the battle.” Rain gulped, the battle was about to happen. She started at Rage, “You will die on this battlefield.” She snarled, “And I will be the one to laugh.” “Silence!” Rage shouted, and raked her claws across Rain’s snout. The gray wolf yelped, as blood stained her nose and snout.
“Start the fires!” Hawk ordered, looking back at Thorn. Thorn nodded and threw the Fire Stones down in the same places he had put the others. They clicked together and fires arose across the plains. “Light the torches!” Ice howled, and FirePack did. Rage saw the glowing flames of fire. Her fur bristled in defiance, “Fire?! They have fire!?” She looked at her pack and tried to hide her surprise, “It is time for the battle!” She managed to growl. DarkPack lifted their snouts to the sky and howled, the red moonlight glimmered in their angry eyes. They charged across the plains, but Rage and Stone stayed behind to guard the hostage “They’re coming!” Ice yelped. “It’s time to charge!” Hawk lowered his head, his green eyes blazing, and muscles tensed. “Let’s do it!” Thorn howled bravely, and FirePack charged into the battle. Their torches were lit and burning with flames. Thunder crackled over-head and lightning struck the sky and reflected in the wolf’s eyes. This was no longer, a battle but a war.
Chapter 18 Hawk launched himself at Sky. Her claws dug deeply into his flesh. He counterattacked by waving his torch not far from her eyes. The white wolf’s eyes began to water and she released her grip on Hawk. “Fire?” She gasped, as Hawk wrestled her to the ground. “Yeah.” He sneered, and stabbed her with his torch. She yowled in agony as the fire burned her flesh. DarkPack drove FirePack closer and closer to the edge of a cliff, but FirePack fought every inch of the way. Ice performed her Fire Roll on Pike, and sent him crashing to the ground in a confused daze. The white wolf dropped her torch and bit down as hard as she could on Pike’s neck. Blood filled her mouth, and the wolf slowly stopped struggling. Thorn quickly zoomed in a circle around Thunder. His coat was dripping with blood and the flames from his torch reflected in his sightless eyes. Thunder kept an eye on the wolf as he zipped around him, and when Thorn launched at Thunder, the wolf reared up on his hind legs and threw Thorn to the ground. Thorn dropped his torch and hit the ground with a painful crash. Thunder smiled, when he saw that Thorn didn’t get back to his paws. The DarkPack wolf ran to help his brother Eagle fight with Hawk. Hawk had dropped his torch and almost put the whole plain to flames. Over-head, lightning struck again. Eagle stared frightened into the fires, as Hawk leapt at him and sent him crashing onto the ground. His body fell directly onto the deadly flames. Eagle yelped as fire burned his fur. Thunder yelped and jumped at his brother, but it was too late. Eagle could not be saved from the fire. The gray wolf snarled and leapt at Hawk, barreling him to the ground. “You killed my brother!” He snarled and raked his claws on Hawk’s underbelly. The dark gray wolf yelped in pain, and his vision grew blurry. He stopped struggling under Thunder’s weight; he did not play dead this time. Thunder smiled at the sight of the dead wolf, and turned to fight Ice. He was about to pounce at her, but thunder rolled and lightning came down from the sky, and struck the DarkPack wolf. Thunder yowled in misery as he fell to the ground, his body fried. Ice threw Snake to the ground, and stabbed him in the neck with her torch. Snake flinched, but threw the white wolf aside. Ice hit the ground with a painful crash. In spite of the pain, Ice rose to her paws again. She snarled and leapt at the enemy wolf. This time her claws pierced his forehead. Snake yowled and fell to the ground, as Ice finished him off. “Don’t mess with FirePack.” She bared her bloodstained fangs.

Book 2 Chapters: 19-Epilogue
Chapter 19 Rain watched the battle in horror as she tried to slip out of the collar that was around her neck. Finally it came off, and she steadied herself before barreling Stone to the ground. The impact sent him crashing to the ground, and Rain ended his life with one quick bite. “You!” Rage snarled, and took step forward as Rain tore across the battlefield and ran to her sister. “Rain!” Ice shouted and touched noses with her sister, “You came back!” “Of course I did.” Rain smiled. As she looked around, she saw all of DarkPack’s wolves were dead, she then saw Hawk and Thorn lying askew on the ground. “Are they dead?” She gasped. Ice looked at their fallen pack mates, “I’m not sure. I’ll go check on them.” Ice trotted to Thorn’s side, then to Hawk’s side. Rain heard a loud snarling coming towards her; she turned to see Rage charging at her. Rage’s eyes were blazing with anger, and her fangs were bared, revealing her dangerous teeth. Rain backed up, but her paws met the edge of the cliff. Lightning came down from the sky again, but this time struck the base of the cliff. Flames shot up, and if Rain fell off the edge, she’d fall into a death trap of fire. But if she was a true FirePack wolf, she would not be harmed. “Rain!” Ice shouted, from next to Hawk, “Rain move!” But Rain couldn’t move, her eyes were wide with fear. Rage sneered and pounced at the gray wolf. She head butted Rain, and sent her falling into the fire below. Ice was to stunned to move, her sister….dead… Thorn began to awaken, surprisingly, he could see. He could see everything! The fallen bodies on the battlefield, the fires burning throughout the plains, and he saw Rage for the first time. The tall, black she-wolf was looking down the side of the cliff and laughing. Thorn knew what she had done to Rain. He would kill her for killing Rain. Thorn charged, his paws only skimming the ground before he leapt, his claws ready and teeth bared angrily. “You monster!” he snarled and landed on Rage’s back. “You killed her! You killed everyone!” Thorn attached his teeth onto the wolf’s scruff. “I will make you bend and break for killing her!” Rage wrestled the small wolf to the ground. She pinned him down under her weight. “You think the Earth can be perfect just because you kill me! You think the planet will be safe by having contentment, and joy, and life touching even it’s darkest corners! But such a world cannot be! It would also have to harbor equal sorrow, and misery, and death.” Rage was about to deliver the death bite, but a howl sounded behind her. She spun around and saw Rain standing on the cliff’s edge, with the fire dancing below at the base of the cliff. “How?” Rage snarled, “I pushed you! I sent you falling into the fire!” The tall she-wolf stalked angrily over to Rain. “She is a FirePack wolf.” Thorn coughed, “She can survive fire.” Rage snarled and leapt at Rain, this time the light gray wolf was ready to fight back.
Chapter 20 Thorn limped over to hawk and Ice and stood beside them. He felt Hawk’s chest with his paw. The wolf was dead. “I can’t fight any more.” Ice coughed and laid her head on Hawk’s chest, “I can’t fight any more if Hawk is no longer here.” She closed her eyes. “You can see now Thorn. You must help Rain, she needs you.” Ice took her last breath, and Thorn rose to his paws. He was ready. Rain clamped her teeth onto Rage’s flank and bit down until blood filled her mouth. Rage yowled and grabbed onto the gray wolf’s scruff and threw her to the edge of the cliff. Rain caught her balance and stopped herself from falling, then charged again. Thorn jumped onto Rage’s back while Rain snapped her jaws at the wolf’s paws. “You cannot kill me!” Rage snarled, “Kill evil and all you’re left with is light! What kind if a world is that?” The she-wolf swatted Rain away with an outstretched claw, and the wolf bounced to the edge of the cliff. Her body slid off the edge, but her claws hung to the ledge. I won’t fall! She clenched her teeth and looked at the flames below. The fire seemed to jump at her blacklegs, like it was trying too pull her into the fire. Rage’s lips curled into a smile as she wrestled Thorn to the ground. “Sometimes the life of another is the price to pay for a perfect world.” Rage snarled, and raked her claws across Thorn’s face. Thorn moaned, as his mysterious gift of sight slowly began to fade. “No!” he yowled. Rage sneered and began to stalk over to Rain who was hanging off the cliff. Rage stared at the gray wolf, “Hello Rain.” She dug her claws into Rain’s paws. The gray she-wolf yelped in pain as her own blood covered her paws, “Say goodbye.” Rage rasped and wrapped her jaws around Rain’s neck. “No!” Thorn panted and charged at the black she-wolf, and dug his claws deeply into her flesh. She released her grip on Rain, and lost her balance as she went falling into the fire below. The brown wolf quickly pulled Rain back onto the overhang of the cliff. His vision was blurry, but he could still see the general outline of things. The two watched as Rage fell into the fire, but before she hit the ground a black hole appeared and swallowed the she-wolf. “The entrance to HellPack.” Thorn coughed, his vision was getting worse, “Now at least she can rule the underworld.” Rain buried her bloodstained snout in Thorn’s fur. “I love you.” She cried. Thunder rolled again, and this time rain began to fall and douse the fires on the battlefield. The moon changed from a blood red color to a light, sky blue, and the clouds parted revealing the beautiful morning sky. The landscape was no longer shrouded in darkness, life returned to the land. Trees became full again and bushes and the undergrowth turned lush and green. Rain and Thorn limped over to their dead pack mates. “Why did death have to come?” Rain hung her head; a warm wind brushed her silver, bloodstained fur. Thorn lowered his head, the same question buzzing in his mind. Around them, FrostPack appeared. The eight animals bowed their heads to the remaining FirePack wolves. “Thank you, FirePack.” Flurry began, “For sending Rage to her true kingdom.” “I knew you would make the right decision in the end.” Storm touched noses with Rain. The touch made Rain shiver with the memory of what it felt like to be a traitor. “I’m sorry I betrayed you all in the first place.” Rain held her tail low. Flurry looked at all the wolves, every Protector in FrostPack and in FirePack, then she spoke, “Rain and Thorn. You are the remaining Protectors of FirePack. Therefore, you are the rightful rulers of Earth. Your pack mates, Ice and Hawk will be watching you from SpiritPack with us.” Rain and Thorn exchanged glances, Thorn knew what they both wanted. “We’re not ruling Earth without them. We’d rather join them in SpiritLands then rule without them.” Thorn stated boldly. Flurry lowered her head and closed her eyes, “Very well. SpiritPack will have four new members today.” She howled. In a flash of light, Thorn and Rain found themselves in a beautiful land; the forests were lush and green, birds sang from the surrounding trees, other wolves ran happily through the lands and a bright beautiful sun shown through puffy white clouds. They were in SpiritPack. This was where all wolves could live in peace.
Epilogue “Should we choose a ruler for Earth?” Bone woofed. Thorn looked at all the Protectors; Flurry, Boulder, Feather, Preston, Bone, Storm, Hawk, Ice and Rain. All of a sudden, prophetic-like words drifted into his mind like clouds. He who is unwanted, will soon be needed. The voice was speaking to him again. he knew what to do, he told the prophecy to all the wolves, “He who is unwanted, will soon be needed.” The wolves gasped, the prophecy to find the leader had come. “The prophecy will find the wolf,” Storm woofed, “We won’t have to search at all.” FirePack raised their noses to the beautiful sky, FrostPack joined in. Their songs echoed all the way into the darkest corners of HellLands. “This isn’t over!” Rage snarled, “It will not end this way!” Ice rose to her paws and paused her howling. “The reign of Rage ends tonight.” The others nodded, “It ends tonight,” They howled to the skies, “It ends tonight.” However, they didn’t know how wrong they were about that. It was just the beginning.
